George W Wertz, 85, of Fairfield for fifty years a grocer in Hanover, died at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. And Mrs. J Arthur Spangler, Fairfield, at 1:15 this morning from a complication of diseases.
After retiring from the grocery business in Hanover ten years ago. Mr. Wortz for a number of years was freight agent for the York railways company, in charge of the Hanover office. For the past two and a half years he lived in Fairfield.
Mr. Wortz was born September 1, 1840, the youngest son of the late Marcus and Elizabeth Wortz, and was the last member of that family. He was married December 17, 1863, to Martha Jane Myers, who died December 5, 1924.
Mr. Wortz was a life-long member of the Lutheran church. He also was a charter member of Valley Home lodge, 740, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Fairfield.
He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Minnie F Spangler, at whose home he died, and Miss Gertrude Wortz, also of Fairfield. Ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services at the Spangler home Monday afternoon at 2:00 the Rev. Ralph W Baker, his pastor, officiating. Interment in the Fairfield cemetery.
