William Blunt, Jr. was a sailor, captain and shipbuilder, the son of William Blunt (1741 - 1795), shipbuilder of Portsmouth and grandson of Rev. John Blunt (1706 - 1748), pastor of Christ Church in New Castle. He was the great-grandson of Hon. John Frost and second great-grandson of Col William Pepperrell of Kittery, ME. At the age of 14, William joined the Colonial Navy aboard the US Sloop of War Ranger. The Ranger was captured at the siege of Charleston, SC in 1780. After release from a British prison, he enlisted twice more and was captured twice more, ending the Revolutionary War in a desolate prison in the Caribbean. In 1786, He married Mary "Polly" Fernald (1766 - 1858) and purchased land in Eden (now Bar Harbor) Maine, still known as Blunt's Point. He had 7 children while living on Mt. Desert Island, the eldest of whom was Mary "Polly" Blunt (1787 - 1875), who married a distant cousin, Samuel Abbot Frost (1795 - 1901). Their son, William Prescott Frost (1823 - 1901) was born in Eden, ME and is the grandfather of legendary American poet Robert Frost. William Blunt, Jr. went into the shipbuilding and shipping business in Trenton, ME with his younger brother John Blunt (1766 - 1816), and was captured by Barbary Pirates in 1814, then personally rescued by Commodore Steven Decatur, Jr., the son of a US Naval ship captain Blunt had served under once when captured in the Revolutionary War. He relocated to Charleston, SC, then Pensacola, FL, and finally New Orleans, LA, where he operated a hog shipping trade between the US and Cuba. He died destitute in New Orleans in 1831, without ever seeing his family again after about 1815.
