Fourth son of nautical publisher Edmund March Blunt, named after his godfather, mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch, a friend of his father, who had recalculated worldwide nautical mathematical tables which were published by Blunt in a landmark book.

Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer on 27 Jul 1854 p3: "Nathaniel Bowditch Blunt, U. S. District Attorney for New York City, died on the 16th, of fever, induced by the too free use of opium taken to check the diarrhea."

Published in the Piscataquis (ME) Observer 20 Jul 1854 p3: "DEATH OF EMINENT NEW YORKERS---N. B. Blunt, District Attorney, New York City, died suddenly. Also, Ex-Justice Merritt, the latter of cholera."
