In 1991, Mortensen joined ESPN and would become a regular presence on the network, as he reported on the programs "Sunday NFL Countdown," "Monday NFL Countdown," "Sports Center," in addition to ESPN Radio. He authored the book "Playing For Keeps" (1991).
