Major League Baseball Player. For ten seasons (1961 to 1970), he was a pitcher with the Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, and Los Angeles Dodgers. Born Alvin O'Neal McBean, he attended Charlotte Amalie High School, Virgin Islands, and was signed as an amateur free agent by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1958. He made his Major League debut on July 2nd, 1961 and pitched in 27 games that year. In 1962, he produced a career-high 15 wins and in and in 1964, he distinguished himself when he was named NL Reliever of the Year, when he recorded 21 saves with a highly-impressive ERA of 1.91, in 58 games pitched. He was acquired by the San Diego Padres during baseball's expansion draft in 1968, and had the distinction of being on San Diego's roster during their inaugural season of 1969. In 409 career regular season games, he compiled a 67 win, 50 loss record, with a lifetime 3.13 ERA, in 1,072 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked for the St. Thomas Housing, Parks and Recreation Department and rose to Deputy Commissioner.
