Actor. He was best known to theatrical fans for his various Tony Award-winning roles during a career that spanned six decades. He studied at the prestigious Jones Haywood School of Ballet in Washington, D.C., and the School of American Ballet in New York City before beginning his Broadway stage career in "The Wiz" at just 15. He played The Scarecrow in the Broadway production. He went on to perform on the Broadway stage for the next three decades in numerous productions such as "Sophisticated Ladies," "The Tap Dance Kid," and "Miss Saigon." His performances in the three aforementioned Broadway productions earned him three Tony Awards for Featured Actor in a Musical. In 1982, he made his television debut in the television movie "Sophisticated Ladies." He went on to appear on the "small screen" in such productions as "The Tracey Ullman Show," "Quantum Leap," "Early Edition," "Touched by an Angel," and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." In 1988, he made his film debut in "Daddy's Boys." His later film credits included such titles as "Wedding Band," "Foreign Student," and "Dreamgirls." He later worked as a choreographer for several productions.
