US Continental Congressman. He was a merchant businessman in Charleston, when appointed by General George Washington a member of the commission to audit accounts of the Revolutionary Army in 1780. In 1785, he was elected to the Second Continental Congress, serving until 1787. He was appointed cashier of the Bank of the United States in Philadelphia by President Washington and served the organization until his death. He was the great-grandfather of Congressman Hamilton Fish Kean and Senator John Kean and great-great-grandfather of Congressman Robert Winthrop Kean.
