Avery has the distinction of being the FIRST Monckton to be born in Oregon of this large family. His father and paternal relatives were all born in Wilmington, Delaware.

During his youth he lived in SE Portland and later in Milwaukie, Oregon.
Avery and Ruth Eleanor Parsons where married on 19 Oct 1940 at Vancouver, Clark County, Washington. They made their first home in Portland, Oregon. In the early years of World War II, Avery worked in the shipyards. They lived in government housing and during this time they would have a daughter. Eventually moving to Ashland, Oregon where their son was born. The marriage did not last as they were divorced in January 1960. Avery moved to Kerby, Jackson County, Oregon where he was in construction, according to his Death Certificate.
