Cornelius Vanderbilt, a Shipping and Railroad Tycoon gave the Moravian Church 8.5 acres on the eastern slope of Todt Hill, on Staten Island in 1865. Three years later he donated an additional 45 acres, which is a large portion of the cemetery. Years later his son, William Anthony, donated a further 4 acres and constructed the residence for the cemetery superintendent as well as the Vanderbilt Mausoleum.
The cemetery originally was opened as a free cemetery to dissuade residents from using their own farm burial grounds.
Opened in 1740, Moravian Cemetery isn't one of the oldest on Staten Island, but it is one of the more picturesque. The older sections of it's 113 acres rival any botanical garden and is worth a walk along the lake and curving paths when the azaleas and cherry trees are in bloom. Sorry, pet walking and bike riding are not allowed on the grounds. There are a number of famous amongst the graves, and every so often the Moravian will offer walking tours to visit the famous residents.
As a nonsectarian cemetery, people from all walks of life and all religions are buried at Moravian. Moravian also offers above as well as below ground burials, all areas of which are very well maintained.
