OAKBORO - Mr. Guy Washington Rushing 81, of 12051 St. Martin Road, died Wednesday, December 4, 1996, at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Funeral is 11:00 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Oakboro with Rev. Donnie Lovette, Pastor officiating. Interment is at Oakboro Cemetery. Visitation is 7:00-9:00 p.m. Friday at Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle.

Mr. Rushing was born on March 16, 1915 in Union County, son of the late Brady and Flora Moore Rushing. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oakboro, where he was instrumental in the construction of the church and Oakboro Home for the Aged. He was active in community affairs, serving as a member of the Oakboro Lions Club, Oakboro Volunteer Fire Department. He was on the Original Board of Trustees of Stanly Community College. He was a member of the initial group that helped get the college started. A key supporter of the Bank of Stanly. An active member of the Democratic Party. A versatile business man, Mr. Rushing was successful in a varied number of enterprises. The enterprises include a grocery store, salvage, used car dealer, furniture and appliances, trucking, real estate, lumber cruser, cattle and horses.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita (NMN) Foreman Rushing, of the home; son, Guy Foreman Rushing of Oakboro; daughter, Mrs. JoAnn Rushing-Shelton of Fayetteville; sister, Mrs. Frances Rushing Snodgrass of Marshville; two grandchildren, Michael Rushing of Oakboro and Heather Rushing of Oakboro.
