Grant Leslie Chaffee Jr. was born 23 February 1925 at Big Sisters Hospital [the old Cephas Bard Hospital] on Poli Street, San Buenaventura, California, where his father had been born. He went to Oxnard High School and graduated in the Class of 1943. He joined the Navy at 17 and served in the Marines as a Corpsman during WWII in the South Pacific with the 4th Marine Division. Per discharge papers: CHAFFEE, Grant Leslie Jr. Services: U.S. Marine Corps Base, San Diego, Cal. Fld. Med Sch. Bn., TC, Camp Elliott, Calif. "C" Med. Co., 4th Med. Bn., 4 Mar. Div., C/O FP, San Francisco, Calif. Hedron 14-1 FAW-14 USS BRETON. The 4th Division landed on Ron-Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands 01 February 1944; Saipan, Marianos Islands 15 June 1944 [wounded]; Tinian, Marianos Islands 24 July 1944; Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands 19 February 1945. On November 28, 1945 the 4th Division was formally deactivated. For his service to his county, Grant received the following: Victory Medal WWII, Point System American Area, Asiatic Pacific (3 stars), Presidential Unit Citation (1 Blue Star) and the Bronze Star Medal-Purple Heart. Grant was discharged from the Navy as a Pharmacist's Mate Second Class, V-6, USNR. Grant Chaffee, Alfred Nunes and Bob Bianchi, all Ventura County residents, served with the 4th Division in the battle for Iwo Jima and all survived the war to come back to Ventura County. After his discharge Grant married Patricia Waldron, his high-school sweetheart. He spent some time at Cal-Poly College, San Luis Obispo, California and the University of California, Davis, California. He worked on Chaffee Ranch near Saticoy for many years until the Chaffee Ranch sold in 1969. He became a real estate broker and for many years brokered land within the counties of California. He was well-known and respected by many people.
