Gabriel owned Solari's Liquors for 13 years and was a partner in Paris Cleaners for 27 years in Ventura. His gg grandfather, Don Jose Pedro Ruiz, a native of Sicily, came to CA on the same ship with Father Serra from Palma, Majorca. Don Jose was granted the Rancho Calleguas by CA Governor Juan B. Alvarado thru the Spanish crown on 05-20-1837. One of Don Jose's sons, Gabriel Ruiz, sold Rancho Calleguas to another Ventura County pioneer, Don Juan Camarillo in 1859. The Camarillo family still owns a portion of the rancho. "Gabe" was a noted three cushion billiard player, having played in championship matches with Wille Hoppe and Wille Masconi. A long time member of Elks Lodge, he had played in Elk's Billiard tournaments throughout the state. He was a track athlete at Ventura High School. He was a musician and toured on the Dollar Steamship Lines with his orchestra 1927-1928. He was also a member of the Board of County Liquor Dealers and of the Italian Catholic Federation.
