Walter and Willard "Bill" Chaffee were fraternal twins. Walter wrote poetry and stories. The following is from the Ventura Star Free Press newspaper 07-25-1927: [thanks to the Kline-Hollingsworth family of Ventura]
"Hurled from the sideless little car which he and his brother had built, Walter Chaffee, 16, was thrown against the steel wheel of a truck and instantly killed in a Ventura avenue auto crash yesterday at 5:45 o'clock p.m. When he was picked up, the last spark of life had sped from his body, which was taken to the undertaking palor of Barker and McCormick. Willard Chaffee, a twin brother, was not injured in the accident. He was taken to the nearby oil field's emergency hospital for examination, while a third man, Joseph Spivey, driver of the second car involved in the crash, was rushed to Ventura in the sheriff's car. The boys were in a long line of traffic following a truck driven by C. F. Baker for the Land Transportation company at a point just beyond the Ventura avenue oil fields. Another line of cars was moving in an opposite direction. A large sedan, ahead of the boys, tried to get around the truck and did it safely, eye-witnesses declared, and the two Chaffee boys, attempted to do likewise. Instead, they struck the car driven by Spivey almost broadside. The force of the impact was great enough to throw Walter Chaffee from the car, as the auto whirled back, so that his head struck the wheel of the truck. Spivey's head was thrown foreward on the steering wheel and he was suffering from slight concusions on the right side of the head, and a deep cut over the right eye. Willard Chaffee was also thrown forward, but not seriously hurt. Baker, driver of the truck, remembered the sedan passing, heard a crash and moved up to the side of the road. Spivey said he did not see the boys approach. All he knew was that he was suddenly struck but he did not learn by whom until a few minutes later. Walter Chaffee is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Hyde Chaffee, prominent shoe merchant, and is a brother of Howard Chaffee, who is now at Toronto, Ontario, where he is in training for the Lake Ontario International swim. Willard Chaffee did not know his brother had been injured until he turned around in the seat of his car to see a crowd clustered about his prone body. He had been only jolted by the accident, he told friends following the crash. His father and mother were awaiting his and brother's arrival home for the evening meal, when Willard returned with the news of his brother's death, Mrs. Chaffee fainted and is seriously ill today. Coroner Oliver Reardon will conduct an inquest into the tragedy tonite at the Reardon Undertaking company office tonight at 8 o'clock. Funeral services for Walter Chaffee will be held from the Barker and McCormick undertaking parlors Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Internment will be made in the Ivy Lawn cemetery."
