Lorena or Rena, as she was known by, was a suffragette and was a political advocate throught California and Washington, DC. She helped women get the right to vote in America. She and her husband, John "Hyde", were instrumental in the formation of the Wallace H. Chaffee VFW (their son killed in WWI) in San Buenaventura in the 1920's. The following information from a book named "Women of the West" - Lorena Chaffee: Writer and active in civic and American Legion work. For 4 years County president of American Legion Auxiliary and president of local unit for 6 years. Former president of Avenue Club; president of Shakespeare Club for 1 year; has acted as State Executive Committeewoman in A.L. Auxiliary, State chairman of Americanization, State Historian and National Delegate. Known to boys in Sawtelle Hospital as "Mother Chaffee." Author of "Lads of the Golden Star" (poem), read by President Harding at the grave of the Unknown Soldier. Author: "My Ship of Dreams"(words and music), "The Heart of Things" (words), "The Haunted House" (a legend), "Origin of the Wind" (a legend). Member: Ventura Shakespeare Club, Ventura Club League, Avenue Woman's Club, American Legion Auxiliary, O.E.S, 7th Day Adventist Church.
