Listed as 22 Year old "painter" on the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Marcus joined his younger brother, George enlisting for service on 05 July 1861 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Both brothers were mustered into Capt Rolf's Company 14th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers on July 5th 1861. This regiment's designation changed to Company K, 1st Regiment Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on 01 Jan 1862 and was attached to General Wadsworth's command of the military district of Washington, DC. On 01 March 1862, Marcus was promoted to Quartermaster Sergeant. He was counted among the ill on Muster Rolls during Sept-Oct 1863 but was still listed as present with his unit. On 01 May 1864 was promoted to 1st Sergeant of Company K, 1st Regiment Massachusetts Heavy Artillery. While this regiment wasn't involved in many battles during the years Marcus served, they were present at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse. Because of his exposed position as 1st Sergeant, Marcus was an easy target for the enemy and was wounded in action on 19 May, 1864. He remained hospitalized until he was mustered out on 08 July 1864.
Less than a week following his discharge he married Elizabeth Collins (1840-1941) of Lawrence, Massachusetts. The couple was married in Haverhill, Massachusetts by R. H. Dudley, Congregational Church clergyman. Marcus and Elizabeth Bartlett moved to Washington D.C. and were the parents of at least one child, Mattie, born 03 April, 1870. The family remained living in Washington, D.C. Daughter Mattie married John D. Morgan of Ohio, a patent attorney. Marcus was employed by the U.S. government as a clerk in the War Department for many years. He died 16 December 1917 and is buried at Arlington National Cemetery, Section 17, Grave B-19076.
