Civil War: Company B, 7th California Infantry

Levi Washington Orm[e]sby was born in Lorain County, Ohio, December 2, 1835. He was the twin brother of William Wallace Ormsby, and the son of Abner William Ormsby, born Connecticut, and Olive Cynthia Gardner, born Scotland. The family were early arrivals in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, where Levi Ormsby was living at Davis with his father [Abner] William Ormsby and twin brother William Ormsby in 1850 (1850 US Census). Levi and William's mother died in Davis County, Utah, during their transit to California in 1851.

During the Civil War Levi and William Wallace Ormsby, both enlisted as privates for 3 years at Marysville, Yuba County, in October 1864; Levi on the 10th and William on the 27th. The brothers were mustered into Captain Alexander Gibson's Company B, 7th California Infantry, on October 31. The Ormsby brothers were posted to Arizona Territory. They returned to California and were mustered out with their company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 26, 1866.

After the war the brothers first went to Sonoma County and then to Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County. Levi W. Ormsby was enumerated in Township 2 [Carpinteria], Santa Barbara County, with his twin brother, William W. Ormsby in 1870. Levi was listed as a single farmer and head of household (1870 US Census). William relocated to Arizona about 1872, whereas Levi remained at Carpinteria where he married Lura Augusta Henderson on January 10, 1876.

Levi W. Ormsby was working at Hueneme, Ventura County, in 1880. Levi appears as a married laborer at his place of employment, so Lura does not appear with him (1880 US Census). Levi and Lura must have separated or divorced in 1883, since Lura was living in Los Angeles in late 1883 and early 1884 when their son Warren was born on January 8, 1884, and by which time she had married (2) Marion S. Davis (1857-1927) sometime in late 1883. This was Marion's 3rd marriage. Levi filed for a Civil War veterans disability pension in Ventura County January 4, 1888, and received application No. 634,757. A certificate number for his pension was not found, which may indicate Levi died before one could be issued (1889?). Also, his name does not appear in the 1890 Veterans Schedules or as a registered voter after that year.

Levi died at Ojai, Ventura County, and he was buried in the Nordhoff Cemetery. Lura became eligible to file for a Civil War widow's pension after the death of her divorced second husband in 1927. She filed for her pension in Humboldt County, California, January 22, 1930, and received application No. 1,659,487 and Veterans Administration certificate No. XC 2,626,970. Lura died in Humboldt County January 17, 1932.
