Henry Augustus Smith known at Gus was born in Myrtle creek Oregon at the ranch of his parents Bernard Pitzer and Susan Dickenson Smith.

He was the younger brother of William R. Smith.

On May 30th 1876, he married Florence Elizabeth Caldwell of Canyonville, Oregon at the home of his in laws Mennus and Mary Caldwell.
Witnesses: Richard Thorn and Millie Stenger
Richard Thorn was a neighbor and father in law to John Caldwell, Florence's brother. Millie Stenger was the sister of Peter F. Stenger who married Florence Caldwell Smith's sister Alameda Caldwell Stenger. Also Millie Stenger would married William R. Smith, brother of Henry Augustus Smith.

Ruckles Resident Dead

Sam Miller, who came to this city this morning to attend the meeting of the taxpayers received word shortly after his arrival that Henry Smith, who had been residing on his place at Riddle, had been found dead. Mr. Miller was unable to obtain particulars, but left at once for his home where he will take charge of the body and arrange funeral services. Mr. Smith has been suffering form a throat malady for some time and it is believed that this was the cause of his death. He was the son of Pitzer Smith, one of the early pioneers of this county and who homesteaded the fine ranch now belonging to J.H. Booth and situated in the vicinity of Ruckles.
