United States Navy Rear Admiral, Astronaut & NASA Administrator. He served as the 8th Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Presidential Administration of George H.W. Bush (1989 to 1992). He received his bachelor's degree from in Aeronautical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and during this period, he was a member of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. After graduation, he enrolled with the Navy flight school and became a naval aviator. During the Vietnam War, he flew F-8 Crusaders with Fighter Squadron 33, and served aboard the CVN-65 and the CV-11. In 1965, he was part of the Manned Orbiting Program with the United States Air Force, and in 1969 he joined NASA and trained as an astronaut. During the 1970s, he served as capsule communicator for three missions with the Sky Lab Program (1973), later for the Apollo-Soyuz Mission (1975). He piloted the STS-2 mission for the Columbia Shuttle (1981), and was elevated to commander for the STS-8 mission of the Challenger Shuttle (1983). In 1989, he retired from the Navy with the rank of rear admiral and served as the 8th Administrator of NASA (1989 to (1992). He went on to serve at various executive positions at the Georgia Tech Research Institute and the Department of Energy. During the course of his career in the Navy, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Legion of Merit Defense Superior Service Medal.
