Husband of Margaret Holley. Was in the Confederate Army during the Civil War.

per Nordhoff Cemetery Book 1: 1870-1900, by Patricia L. Fry with Dennis Mullican:
"Steepleton, Thomas Benton - Died February 18, 1893, in Ventura at the age of 55. He had been in poor health for a long time. Mr. Steepleton left three children: Catherine (Kate), who was a teacher, as son about 16 and a 7 year-old daughter (born in Ojai on April 21, 1885). When Mr. Steepleton came to Ojai in 1875, he was the Upper Valley schoolteacher. He also ran the 160-acre Sunny Side Ranch along the foothills near what is now Fordyce Road. Harry Fordyce later bought the Steepleton place. Steepleton had a large home there, a granary and stables. He grew almonds. Mr. Steepleton was one of the first members of the local Grange. Shortly after Steepleton's death, his daughter, Kate was badly burned when a spark from a passing train started a brush fire near the school where she was teaching in Santa Paula. In trying to save the school, her clothing caught fire. The newspaper account said that both of her parents were dead by that time. Mr. Steepleton, who had served in the Confederate Army, was buried next to his wife in the Nordhoff Cemetery. The marker for Mr. Steepleton was made in recent years and is incorrect. Although the newspapers of the period sometimes referred to the Steepletons as Stapleton, that was also incorrect. In fact, the newspaper obituary notice spelled Mr. Steepleton's name Stepleton. In checking the county grantor/grantee records and the marriage notices, however, we found them to be consistent with cemetery records. Steepleton is the correct spelling of his name. The date of death on his marker is also incorrect. He died in 1893. Cemetery records and the newspaper obituary concur. The Steepletons are buried along the roadway in central-east section of the cemetery."

Per 1880 U.S. Federal census Thomas Benton is living in San Buenaventura, Ventura, California, born abt 1835 Illinois Head Married Farmer, spouse name Maggie [born Canada], father born VA, mother born MI
