Sgt. Charles R. Horne
From Nordhoff Cemetery Book, by Patricia L. Fry with Dennis Mullican:
"Died August 22, 1896, at the age of 51 years from a heart attack. Mr. Horne was a first sergeant in Company D, 14th Marine Infantry in the Union Army. He came to Ojai in 1876 and purchased 160 acres on Reeves Road in the east end. It is believed that Horn Canyon is named for this man. Although his name is spelled with an 'e' on his grave marker, most historical accounts of Mr. Horne spelled his name Horn. Among his accomplishments, Horne headed the construction on the Nordhoff Presbyterian Church in 1883. He left a wife and seven children when he died. Mr. Horne's grave is marked. He's along the fence in the central-east section of the cemetery."
