Per Ventura County Death Index 1872-1905, Ventura County Genealogical Society, http://www.venturacogensoc.org/cpage.php?pt=45: DELINE, Isaac M., died 27 December 1894, age 62 years, 9 months, 6 days, Male, Married, born Orleans Co., NY

Thank you to Mary Tim Baggott for the investigative work finding out Isaac M. Deline led a double life:
"According to information in the Civil War Pension Application File for Isaac Marshall Deline, he 'abandoned' his family in Joliet in 1870, never to return, although he was still listed as living there in the 1870 & 1880 censuses, as well as in the Joliet city directories (as a carpenter) for the years 1884, 1885, 1887, 1888, 1889-1890. During his military service Deline sustained an injury from a rock to his left leg later resulting in a chronic ulcer. He applied for, and received, a pension because of this in 1890. Both wives applied for widow's pensions after his death in 1894, only his first wife receiving such a pension. Evidence was sought, but not found, for a divorce from his first wife Nancy, for service in the 5th Tennessee Regiment, for his having been wounded three times, for his having been promoted to colonel."

From the Nordhoff Cemetery Book, by Patricia L. Fry with Dennis Mullican.
"Deline, Isaac Marshall - died December 27, 1894, of Bright's disease at the age of 62. Mr. Deline came to Ojai in August of 1887 and married Lottie Greenleif in September of the same year. He was a building contractor and, together with E.P. Zimmerman, built the first Thacher School. Born in Orleans County, New York, on March 22, 1832, Deline moved to Chicago and joined the service in Illinois in 1862 as 2nd lieutenant in the 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company K. He resigned in 1863 ... and in 1868 [1870] he moved to Denver. Two years later he moved to California and worked as a money-sizer in the San Francisco mint for five years. He reportedly built the first house in what is now Pasadena. In Ojai, Mr. Deline owned a ranch in Senior Canyon. For several months prior to his death, Mr. Deline was so uncomfortable that he could not lie down. He sat upright in a chair day and night except for a period of three weeks during which he could rest in bed. His wife's name was Lottie Greenleif, born 1848 Canada, died 27 March 1916 Ojai, CA. They had two children: Frank and May. They were charter members of the Congregational Church of Nordhoff and Isaac served as Sunday school superintendent. Frank died in 1949 [not buried in Nordhoff] and May C. Deline, born 21 May, 1888 Ojai, died 04 February 1974 in Ojai and is buried at Nordhoff Cemetery in the Deline family plot."

From http://www.netoasis.net/family/207.157.197.9/Mason/52199news12.html: "In June 1917, a fire broke out in Matilija Canyon because of carelessness by a camper and when the fire roared out of control and headed for the town of Nordhoff, the flight to safety began. The fire destroyed most of the Ojai Valley. The little church building was burned to the ground as the fire swept the hills and crept its way into town. Before the fire was stopped, it had consumed more than 60 buildings and two churches. Edward D. Libbey, Ojai's greatest benefactor, sent a telegram to the valley saying, "From such devastation and ruin will spring renewed energy and courage. We must unite and begin to rebuild" – and so they did. The fire did not prevent the congregation from having its weekly meetings and they quickly secured the grammar school auditorium for use on Sunday mornings and evening worship services. The thoughts of rebuilding were on everyone's mind, but how they were to raise the money was the important question. Finally, it was decided that the collection received during the morning service would go toward the general fund, and the evening service collection would go to the new building fund. The minister, W. E. Smith, turned his salary back to the church to be added to the building fund. Rev. Smith then obtained an additional job for his living expenses. Many people in the valley helped raise money for the new building; everyone did their part. When enough money was raised, a new church building was built with the construction under the supervision of Frank DeLine. DeLine's father, Isaac Marshall DeLine, had brought his family to the Ojai Valley in August of 1887 and had homesteaded property in Senior Canyon. Upon their arrival, Mrs. DeLine took over the job of school "marm" of the Matilija School, located in the canyon by the same name. She taught there until the great fire of 1917 completely destroyed the school. Mr. DeLine, a contractor by trade, assisted in the building of the first Thacher School buildings in 1888. The DeLine family was also a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Ojai. The new church was dedicated in the summer of 1918."
