My grandfather Grant graduated from Ventura High School 1917. He served a short time in the Army and was in Officer's Candidate School right after the end of WW1 but was discharged after war was over. He attended University of California in Berkley for approximately one year. Started a men's clothing store in Ventura with his brother, Harold and it was called CHAFFEE BROS. Located on corner of Chestnut and Main near the Ventura Theater. He also started a confectionay store on Main St. He met, there, Lucille Booth, who had been hired in the store, and within a short time, they married. They lived on Poli St. for several years and then the family moved to a ranch near Camarillo, owned by Grant's mother, Eva C. Solari-Chaffee. He worked and managed the ranch for a number of years and when his sons were out of military service, they helped with the working and managing of the ranch. The ranch was part of the Rancho Del Norte, land which had been claimed by Spain (abt 18,000 acres) and given out to an individual living in the area, Juan Sanchez, a retired soldier of the Presidio of Santa Barbara. From there the Sanchez family lost the land due to a debt and the Schiappapietra family (Italy) received the land because they had taken over the debt from Henry Dubbers. Because of their friendship (Agostino Solari was a "silent" partner) with each other, the Solari's from Santa Barbara & Ventura ended up with part of the parcel, due to the probate hearing regarding the death of Agostino. Antonio Shiappapietra went into court and made open declaration that one-third of every dollar and every piece of realty that the Schiappapietra brothers owned, belonged to Agostino Solari. Grant Chaffee Sr.'s mother, Eva C. Solari, was left about 300 acres, from her father, Agostino, after his death. Grant Sr. worked on the ranch for many years before and with his sons until his death in 1960.
