"The Tenth Illinois Volunteer Infantry was one of the first six Regiments formed as a result of the Governor's order of April 16, 1861. This early "three-month" regiment was formed from the first four companies that reached Springfield--from Adams, Morgan Knox and Madison counties. Subsequently added were companies from Henderson, Clark and De Kalb counties and three artillery batteries (the Ottawa Artillery or Houghtaling's Battery (Company F, Light Artillery), the Springfield Artillery or Hopkins' Battery (Company I, Light Artillery) and McAllister's Battery or the Plainfield Artillery (Company K, Light Artillery). On July 29, 1861 when the regiment mustered in for three years, the artillery companies were replaced by volunteers from St. Louis (Company F), from Randolph County (Company I) and from Madison County (Company K). The other companies were from Morgan County (Companies A and B), Adams and Knox County (Company C), Madison County (Company D), Henderson County (Company E), Clark and Henderson Counties (Company G) and De Kalb County (Company H). The troops were stationed in Mound City, Illinois in 1861 and moved to Bird's Point, Missouri in January 1862. The men saw their first action against Jeff Thompson's troopers near Sykeston, Missouri in March. Later that month the Tenth was engaged in the siege of New Madrid, Island No. 10 and Tiptonville. In April the Tenth was moved to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee and engaged at the siege of Corinth, Mississippi April 29 to May 30. Until mid June the Regiment pursued the retreating enemy to Booneville, Mississippi; then were ordered to Nashville and fought in the siege of Nashville in September, October and November. The Tenth Illinois Infantry remained at Nashville until July 1863. After assisting in driving Wheeler's Cavalry from the Sequatchie Valley, Tennessee, they crossed the Tennessee River (November 24) on pontoons to support Sherman's attack at Tunnel Hill and Mission Ridge. On January 1, 1864 the Regiment reenlisted as veterans. Following a 30 days furlough and with 200 recruits added they moved to Rossville, Georgia and accompanied Sherman's army in the Atlanta campaign. The Tenth fought at Rocky Faced Ridge, Buzzard's Roost Gap, Resaca, Rome, Dallas, New Hope Church and Allatoona Hills in May; at Kennesaw Mountain, Pine Mountain, and Lost Mountain in June; and at Chattahoochee River, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta in July. In a flanking movement around Atlanta, the Regiment fought at Jonesboro and Lovejoy Station then pursued Hood into Alabama in October. Finally they marched with Sherman "to the sea," first fighting at Savannah, Georgia, then Pocotaligo, Edisto Rivers' Bridges, Bennaker's Bridge, Cheraw, Fayetteville and lastly Bentonville, North Carolina. After Johnston's army surrendered the Tenth marched through Richmond and Fredericksburg, Virginia to Washington DC for the Grand Review on May 24, 1865. The Tenth mustered out July 4, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky.[2]"
