Charles H. Townsend died very suddenly in the morning at the age of 50 years and 9 months. He had been troubled for several days with a bad cold and not getting better was advised to remove from his cabin near the depot to the hospital but delayed going when he was suffering so severely from pneumonia that his removal to the hospital by Dr. Bard was determined to made imperative.
A carriage was secured but before reaching the hospital Mr. Townsend breathed his last. The deceased was born in Massachusetts in 1843 and served during the war in Company B, 17th Massachusetts volunteer infantry.
Poor Charlie was a good natured, inoffensive fellow and the only cause for his notoriety grew out of the several suits of law in which he was plaintiff to enforce a claim for damage against J.S. Briggs. He lost an arm through an altercation with Mr. Briggs several years ago, the details of which have been so often ventilated that is unnecessary to repeat. Each time it was appealed to the Supreme court and remanded, and the day after Townsends death had been set for the third trial.
He has lived for the past 20 years in Ventura and became a member of the Cushing Post G. A. R. at the time of its establishments.
At the time of the G. A. R. encampment held in Ventura in 1892 Mrs. Townsends name appeared in the roster as published in the FREE PRESS at the time and through that medium his sisters Mrs. Mary O Stevens living in Peabody Mass., who is a member of the W. R. C. and takes great interest in the G. A. R. matters became for the first time in several years aware of her brothers whereabouts and wrote to him and to Commander Hobart and has since kept up a regular correspondence with Mrs. Hobart. He had family in Massachusetts.
By direction of the coroner commander Hobart has taken charge of Mr. Townsends effects and will send his watch and other keepsakes to Mrs. Stevens.
The funeral was held in the afternoon under the auspices of Cushing Post. The regular ritual burial service of the G. A. R. was observed.
Company D furnished an escort and firing squad, who fired the parting salute over the grave at the cemetery, and Corporal Capito sounded 'Taps'.
