Jasper T. Hawes is dead. A good kindly old man, honored, respected, loved by his fellow men, he passed to the reward he has so fully earned and which he so well deserves. For 20 years Jasper resided in Ventura and lived an honorable, conscientious life. No word of blame or censure, no word of criticism has ever been heard against him….No better exemplar of the 'Golden Rule" ever lived and no more generous, no more charitable man, no more just or upright citizen has ever been known in this community.
Mr. Hawes was in his 78th year, having passed his 77th mile stone on the 17th day of June. For the past 2 years he has been feeble and has gradually declined. The day before his 75th birthday he suffered a stroke of paralysis and had one or two slight strokes since. On Thursday evening the last stroke came. Mr. Hawes never gained consciousness and passed away at 6am Friday morning.
The Hawes family came to Ventura in 1891 from Dakota on where they had resided for several years. Prior to that time Mr. Hawes had lived in Wisconsin for 40 years. In that state near Madison; and in fact in the same house his 5 children were born. Of these there yet remain one daughter Mrs. FB Clewitte of Los Angelese and one son Fred Hawes of Nordhoff. Mrs. Hawes was a native of Pennsylvania.
He was a veteran of the Civil war, having volunteered his services and was enlisted in the 42ns Wisconsin. His service was of about a years duration but during that time he contracted disease, the effects of which never left him in all the years thereafter.
Besides his widow and two children, he leaves 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. At the cemetery Cushing Post, Grand Army of the Republic were in charge of the burial ceremonies.

Jaspar Hawes's headstone was discarded in the 1960's by decisions made by the Ventura City Council. There is no memorial for Jaspar T. Hawes.

Statement from Steve Schleder, webmaster of restore St. Mary's Cemetery:
"This is the federal military issue veteran white marble headstone for someone who fought in the American Civil War. This headstone was removed from it's grave location hence the grave was desecrated by the City Council and Ed Lupton, Park Superintendent of the City of San Buenaventura, California in 1965. It has been spirited away for safe keeping since 1965. The refusal by each City Council since 1965 to restore these and all of the 600+ desecrated headstones to their proper grave location makes each City Council person, since, culpable for this 3,000 pioneer grave desecration. It is not a memorial dog park, it can only be a cemetery of our fore-fathers by state and federal law."

∼Hawes Jasper T Union Private G 49th WI Infantry Block 7, Lot 2, Center Sec.

Jasper T. Hawes, son of Matthew Hause (all of Matthew's descendants spell their surname "Hawes"), was born in 1834 in Verona, Wisconsin, where his father was the first justice of the peace and his brother was the first constable. Jasper enlisted in the 49th Regiment, Wisconsin Infantry, Company G as a private on 13 Feb 1865, and after six months of vicious fighting he received a disability discharge on 30 Sep 1865. After the war, he ended up in San Buenaventura (now Ventura), California, and died there on 7 Jul 1911. He was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery with a Civil War marker on his stone, pictured here.

But his headstone was discarded in 1969 by decree of the Ventura City Council, to make room for what is now a dog park. According to activist Steve Schleder, webmaster of "Restore St. Mary's Cemetery," Jasper's stone has been "spirited away for safe keeping," where it remains today. Jasper, however, still lies under the dog park.
