A funeral is to be held in Montreal for former prime minister Brian Mulroney's mother, Irene, who died of natural causes Saturday morning at the age of 90.

The family matriarch, who maintained a low profile during her son's political career, is to be buried next to her husband in her home town of Ste-Catherine-de-Portneuf, Que., some 300 kilometres east of Montreal.

Exact funeral arrangements would not be known until today, family spokesman Luc Lavoie said yesterday.

He said he received a call from the distraught former prime minister, informing him that Mrs. Mulroney had died at Montreal General Hospital at 4 a.m. Saturday.

"He was shaken up," Mr. Lavoie told Montreal's La Presse.

"But I personally believe that he was expecting it. She had been in poor health for several years."

Mrs. Mulroney suffered a heart attack in November of 1986 and underwent emergency quadruple-bypass surgery in May of 1991 while vacationing in Florida.

Born Mary Irene O'Shea, she married electrician Benedict Martin Mulroney in 1934. Two years later, the young couple moved to the newly built pulp-and-paper town of Baie Comeau, Que., on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River.

There she gave birth to six children: four girls and two boys. Brian was born in 1939.

Olive Mulroney Elliott, Brian's sister, recalled the close relationship between her mother and brother in her 1984 book Brian Mulroney: The Boy from Baie Comeau.
