Henri came to the United States in 1884 at the age of 14, his parents having sent him to avoid the German Army. He initially lived in New Jersey, then moved to the Benson area. On the 1900 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Clayton Township, Woodford, Illinois with his wife Maggie and daughters Maude, Rachel, and Ruth. After his marriage to Maggie, they moved to Minonk in 1914. It is believed that the farm in Minonk was previously owned by his father-in-law, Henry Behrens Memmen. On the 1930 Census, he was listed in Minonk Township, Woodford, Illinois with his wife Maggie and son Donald. On the 1940 Census, he was listed as a farmer in Minonk Township, Woodford, Illinois with his wife Maggie and son Donald. He was affiliated with the Minonk Baptist Church.
