Family speculation is that, after Harriet Fowler was born 1814 in New York, the family moved to Licking County, Ohio. After Henry Clay was born in 1834, the Fowler family moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana. John F. Fowler Jr. traveled back and forth to California [Napa County] from to Indiana [South Bend] occasionally. He had been living in California with his wife Elizabeth Howey for some years before returning to South Bend, Indiana where he died in the home of his son, Alexander Fowler

According to Fowler Mallet book, Chart H, it states John F. Fowler Jr. was known as "Uncle Johnny." It also states he was born about 1790.

Per 1830 U.S. Federal census John Fowler is living in Burlington, Licking, Ohio, in the household 1 male adult 40-50 years old, 1 male child under 5 years old, 2 male children 5-10 years old, 2 male children 10-15 years old, 1 female child 10-15 years old, 1 female child 15-20 years old and 1 adult female 30-40 years old

From Viola Lawrence, a direct family descendant of Col. Alexander Fowler, the son of John F. Fowler Jr.: "John F. Fowler in St. Joseph County or South Bend, Indiana was issued a license as tavern keeper in 1835...on unknown date he sold it and moved to California." [before 1860]

Per the St. Joseph Valley Register, December 6, 1860: "In South Bend, November 30th, at the residence of his son, Alexander Fowler. JOHN FOWLER, Senior, late from California, in the 79th year of his age: [inscription] "He has made his last journey to mingle his dust With the loved ones his hearth stone had blessed; And calm and content with this hope and this trust, He laid him down sweetly to rest."
