U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He worked as a teacher until starting a successful dry goods business in the late 1840s and then relocated moved to Colorado, in 1860, to invest in mining. There he was one of the founders of the City of Denver and founded the First National Bank of Denver. Entering politics, he helped organize the Colorado Territory and was a member of the Colorado Territorial House of Representatives, (1861-63). In 1871, he was elected as a Republican Delegate to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. Upon the admission of Colorado as a State into the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1876-79). Not seeking reelection, he served as chairman of the Colorado Republican Party until 1884, when he returned to New York and where he died at age 60.
